Who California Requires to File an SR-22

Nobody wakes up needing an SR-22 out of nowhere. The requirement is always attached to something that already happened with your license — and your DMV or court paperwork is where it lives. Before buying anything, read that paperwork or run your record; guessing costs money either way.
The triggers we see, in order
Driving without insurance. California treats an uninsured driver at a stop or a crash seriously: Vehicle Code 16029 makes driving without coverage an offense on its own, and the path back to a valid license routinely includes proof of financial responsibility going forward — the SR-22.
Auto World Insurance Services keeps a statewide guide to SR-22 insurance in California that covers the DMV side in more detail.
DUI. The classic trigger. After a DUI conviction, reinstating your license almost always requires the filing, and it stays a condition for the full requirement period.
Certain suspensions and too-many-points situations. When the DMV suspends for cause and wants continuing proof before restoring privileges, the SR-22 is its instrument of choice.
What the state expects the filing to prove
An active California liability policy at the state minimums — $30,000/$60,000 for bodily injury and $15,000 for property damage — filed by the insurer, with the insurer obligated to report if the policy ever lapses. The proof requirement of Vehicle Code 16028 still applies every time you drive.
How to confirm you actually need one
Check the reinstatement letter, the court's sentencing terms, or your driver record. The phrase to look for is "proof of financial responsibility." We ask every SR-22 caller to read us that line first — about one caller in a stretch of them turns out not to need the filing at all, and we'd rather say so than sell a form nobody asked for.
If the paperwork does say SR-22, the fix is quick: a two-minute quote, a policy that includes the filing, and electronic transmission to the DMV — usually the same day.

Where does it say I need an SR-22?
On your DMV reinstatement paperwork, your court terms, or your driver record — look for 'proof of financial responsibility.' If none of those mention it, question anyone trying to sell you a filing.
Do out-of-state violations require a California SR-22?
It depends on which state is demanding the proof and where you're licensed now — the rules differ by state pair. Bring the paperwork to the call and we'll read it with you before anything gets bought.
Is the SR-22 requirement the same as high-risk insurance?
They travel together but aren't the same thing. The SR-22 is the state's filing requirement; 'high-risk' just describes how some carriers price the violation behind it. Different carriers price that history very differently — which is exactly why comparing matters.
